3 Cheers for Diction!

Being that it’s (oct.16th) National Dictionary Day, also Noah Webster’s birthday, I think it’s important to show my appreciation of our every growing diction with a post of praise.

I didn’t know it was National Dictionary Day until about an hour ago, but randomly enough I was in a bathroom at a coffee shop this morning and wall-papered everywhere around me was pages from a children’s dictionary.  I spent my entire time reading about extra meanings of words I incorrectly thought I knew everything about! Enjoying them along with picture accompaniment! It made me want to read through a dictionary from start to finish! How much wiser would I be then?

Getting back into a more realistic state of mind I should note that I do a similar habit of dictionary reading when I’m in focus of improving my daily habits. I found an exercise book entitled 1100 Words You Need To Know:

writings-1100-words

Containing not only definitions, but exercises for making use of the words just so you know they are ingrained in your noggin’. Better have them ingrained or else you’ll have a hard time in the future quizzes!

Technology advancements have had a lot of good and bad impact on our society, but its allowed for us to experiment with words is like none-other! If you’re anything like me you’re constantly right clicking on words with a red underline finding what the word should have been. Want to look up a definition? Just throw it into your Dictionary.com search!

The new tools can easily allow oneself to be sloppy but we must persevere! Keep learning new words and try to incorporate more and more words into your every day diction both verbally and through writing. There really are an amazing amount of words out there and every time I look through the paper there is a new word to look up and use in my daily repertoire.

Yes, I had to right click on that word. And I’m okay with that.
